How Does the Section 16d Recognition Visa Work? (2026)
The verdict
This is the route for a qualification that Germany will recognise, but not yet. It exists to let you complete the adaptation measure or examination inside the country. You must prove EUR 1,091 a month, and while the measure runs you may work up to 20 hours a week in unrelated employment.
Legal basis: AufenthG section 16d · Visum zur Anerkennung ausländischer Berufsqualifikationen

Do You Qualify?
- You hold a foreign vocational qualification based on at least two years of training, or a university degree that is state-recognised in the country that issued it.
- A German recognition body has assessed your qualification as only partly equivalent and named the measure that would close the gap.
- You meet the language requirement for the measure, which is set by the profession rather than by this section.
The Steps, in Order
- 1
Apply for recognition of your qualification and obtain the assessment naming the measure you still need.
- With
- The recognition body for your profession, which differs by occupation and Bundesland
- Bring
- Qualification certificates, transcripts, proof of work experience, translations
- Fee
- None at this step
- Takes
- Set by each body and profession, not nationally. Start this before anything else: the assessment is what the visa rests on.
- 2
Secure a place on the qualification measure or the examination the assessment names.
- With
- The provider of the measure, often an employer, a chamber or a school
- Bring
- The recognition assessment (Defizitbescheid)
- Fee
- None at this step
- Takes
- Depends on the provider's intake dates
- 3
Apply for the national visa under section 16d at the German mission in your country of residence.
- With
- The German embassy or consulate responsible for where you live
- Bring
- Passport, the application form, biometric photos, and the proof of funds for this route; Your own mission's checklist: there is no national document list, each mission publishes its own
- Fee
- EUR 75
- Takes
- Not centrally published. Appointment and decision times are set per mission and vary from weeks to months, so book the appointment before anything else.
- 4
Convert the visa into a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel) after you arrive and register.
- With
- The Ausländerbehörde of the city you registered in
- Bring
- Meldebescheinigung from the Anmeldung, passport with the visa, biometric photo, proof of health insurance
- Fee
- EUR 100
- Takes
- Set by each city, not nationally. Apply before the visa expires: a booked appointment is what protects your status if the date falls later.
After you arrive: The Anmeldung within two weeks, the Steuer-ID by post after it, and the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde before the visa expires. Every deadline of the first 3 months.
What You Must Prove
EUR 1,091 a month (2026)

Also accepted
- A declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung)
- An employment contract where the measure is taken alongside work
Work and Duration
Working
Up to 20 hours a week in employment unrelated to the qualification during an independent measure. Work related to your qualification is not capped where the employer is involved in the measure, and the employed variant allows unrestricted hours in the designated role plus 20 hours a week of secondary work.
Duration
Up to 24 months for a qualification measure, extendable by at most 12 more, to a maximum total stay of three years. A pure qualification analysis runs up to six months.
What It Turns Into
Nothing converts automatically when the measure ends. With recognition granted you become a skilled worker and can move to a work permit, or to the section 20 job-search permit for up to 18 months if you do not yet have an offer.
What This Route Does Not Allow
- It is not a general work visa. The permitted hours exist to support the measure, not to replace it.
- It does not survive the measure. Once the qualification analysis or adaptation ends, the basis of the permit ends with it.
